The following biographical sketch was compiled at the time of induction into the Academy in 1982.

 

Young Jacob Boozer, banker, businessman, insurance company executive, and civic leader, was originally a native of Noma, Florida and was born July 9, 1912. He graduated from the University of Alabama in 1936 with a bachelor of science degree.

In 1937 he entered the business world as a banker in Dothan. He served in the U.S. Navy from March 1943 to June 1946 and retired as Lt. Senior Grade.

Boozer served as Secretary-Treasurer and General Manager of Dixie Sporting Goods; was a partner of Hayes Gilchrist Cris Craft Sales, and was president and treasurer of Cotton States Life Insurance Company from 1959 to 1973. In January 1, 1974, he became Senior Vice President of Federated Guaranty Life Insurance Company. He was Senior Vice President of Alabama Farm Bureau Insurance Companies and Secretary-Treasurer and Director of Southland Insurance Company.

He served on the Board of Directors of Colonial BancGroup, Penn Media Incorporated, Alabama Safety Council, Association of Alabama Life Insurance Companies, National Kidney Foundation of Alabama Incorporated, State Cancer Society, Tombigbee Girl Scouts, Alabama Alliance of Business and Industry, Alabama Chapter of the Leukemia Society of Alabama Incorporated, Salvation Army, and Alabama Heart Association.

Boozer was active in the YMCA, United Fund Drives, the Boy Scout Training Program, and the Gorgas Post of the American Legion.

He was an active member and Junior Warden of the Christ Episcopal Church in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. On June 28, 1941, Young Boozer married Phyllis Chamberlain and they had three children: Jo Ann Boozer Henderson, Ellen Boozer Daly and Young Jacob Boozer, III.

Young Boozer died in June 2000.
