Philip E. Austin

The following biographical sketch was compiled at the time of induction into the Academy in 1995 and in 1998.

The present Chancellor of The University of Alabama System, Philip Edward Austin, first saw the light of day in Fargo, North Dakota. Dr. Austin is the son of Mr. & Mrs. William J. Austin.

After attending grammar and high school in Fargo, North Dakota, he entered North Dakota State University where he earned a B. S. degree in 1964 and an M. S. Degree in Agricultural Economics in 1966.

At Michigan State University, Philip Edward Austin earned an M. A. Degree in 1968, and in 1969 was awarded a Ph.D. degree by that same institution of higher learning.

Dr. Austin is married to Susan G. Austin, a scientist in her own right. They are the parents of two sons. Prior to Dr. Austin's removal to Alabama in 1989 to accept the Chancellorship of The University of Alabama System, he was president of Colorado State University and subsequently Chancellor of the Colorado State University System.

Among the important positions Dr. Austin filled prior to his arrival in Alabama were: Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Baruch College in New York City. He was also Director of the Interdisciplinary Doctoral Program in Public Policy at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Austin's service in the United Sates Army extended from 1969-1971. He served as an Economist with the rank of Army Captain in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Economic Affairs at U.S. Military Headquarters in Saigon, Vietnam. He was awarded the Bronze Star, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal during his military duty.

Arriving in Alabama six years ago, Dr. Austin has been dedicated to improving the quality of life for all of its citizens. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Alabama Power Company, Alabama Cast Iron Pipe Company, the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, and the Boy Scouts of America. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of Fleet Bank.

His demanding schedule has not kept him from paying his civic dues and being a devoted family man.
