The following biographical sketch was compiled at the time of induction into the Academy in 1998.

J. Stanley Mackin was born in 1932, and grew up on Birmingham's Southside. He earned his B.S. degree from Auburn University. He is also a graduate of Stonier Graduate School of Banking and the Commercial Lending School at the University of Oklahoma.

After graduating from Auburn, Mr. Mackin served four years in the United States Navy. He then returned to Birmingham and entered the homebuilding business. He began his banking career in the Commercial Loan Department in Birmingham's Exchange Security Bank. The bank later merged with banks in Huntsville and Montgomery, and became First Alabama Bank, and still later, through dramatic expansion evolved into what we know today as Regions Bank. From the commercial loan department in the Birmingham Exchange Security Bank, Mr. Mackin advanced through the ranks and today is chairman of the board of Regions Financial Corporation, one of the largest financial institutions in the country. He has been the driving force in the phenomenal growth and development of Regions, and is one of the leading bankers in the United States.

Mr. Mackin is a member of the Bankers Roundtable, the American Bankers Council, the American Institute of Banking, and the Alabama Bankers Association.

Mr. Mackin is active in civic and community affairs, serving as a member of the board of directors of a diverse and impressive number of institutions and organizations including SETON Health Corporation, the Economic Development Partnership of Alabama, the Alabama Public Television Foundation, the Business Council of Alabama, and Southern Research Institute.

The board of directors of Regions established a chair in banking in his honor at Auburn University.

Mr. Mackin and his wife Mary Jo had two sons and one daughter.

Mr. Mackin passed away on June 11, 2021.
